Motive Power

The staff and associates of TranSys Research Ltd. have played significant roles in the assessment of motive power within North America. They were central players during the late 1970s in a joint industry/government assessment of the feasibility and economic attractiveness of railway electrification in Canada. More recently, a strategic study of Canadian motive power requirements and a global assessment of technology capabilities and potential was completed in 1987. This work assessed the economic attractiveness of alternative component systems (ac traction motors, steerable trucks), performance capabilities (adhesion and power) and alternative engines and fuels. This had a significant impact on both the railroad- and supply- industry and played a major role in a builder's decision to integrate development of ac traction and steerable trucks into its latest locomotive offering to the North American railroad industry.
